State lawmakers have passed a bill that will extend the hours alcohol can be sold in bars, nightclubs, and restaurants to 4 a.m.

Senate Bill 905 creates a five-year pilot program of the “Let our Communities Adjust Late Night” or “Local” act.

It will allow nine cities that have expressed interest in later nightlife hours, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento, the freedom to implement them.

It also allows cities to decide individually whether to limit extended hours to certain neighborhoods or even nights of the week.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said she looks forward to beginning the implementation process.

Gov. Brown has until Sept. 30 to sign the bill into law.
