ROHNERT PARK (KRON) — A mattress fire that damaged a Motel 6 room in Rohnert Park on Wednesday morning was likely caused by a burning cigarette that fell from a man’s mouth as he was lying in bed, according to the city’s Department of Public Safety.
Rohnert Park’s public safety dispatch center received a fire alarm call at 12:20 a.m. from The Motel 6 at 6145 Commerce Blvd. where heavy smoke was coming from room 234.
The report also said a mattress was on fire. Guests evacuated themselves while others used a fire extinguisher to try to extinguish the fire, fire officials said.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was still coming from the room and firefighters finished the work and removed the mattress.
The fire charred a wall and the room sustained smoke and heat damage, according to fire officials.
No guests were injured and all were able to return to their rooms.
An investigation revealed that a friend rented room 234 for 30-year-old Utah resident Neeman Hammer.
Hammer told investigators that he had smoked some methamphetamine Tuesday and Tuesday night, fell asleep on the bed while smoking a cigarette and woke up with the mattress on fire.
Hammer ran from the room. Fire investigators found him across the street at a Jack in the Box restaurant.
Hammer was taken to a hospital in case he suffered from smoke inhalation and because he was under the influence of drugs.Bay City News contributed to this report.
