NAPA CO. (KRON) — Three burglars got a surprise when they entered a home in rural Napa County to find a sheriff’s sergeant inside.

On Monday around 1:00 p.m., the sergeant was making lunch at his home in the 2100 block of Monticello Road in unincorporated Napa County, east of Napa. Three burglars wearing masks and dressed in black walked through an open door of the home, sheriff’s Capt Keith Behlmer said.

“The sergeant drew his weapon and said ‘Freeze,'” Behlmer said.

The sergeant detained one of the suspects but the other two suspects fled, according to Behlmer. The sergeant detained 19-year-old Jesse Reyes of Napa.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area and found the other two suspects, 19-year-old Luis Kevin Flores of Napa and a 16-year-old juvenile.

The sergeant said one of the three suspects had what appeared to be a crowbar but it was not found after the two suspects fled.

The three suspects, Reyes, Flores and the juvenile were arrested and are believed to be responsible for two other burglaries in east Napa County which occurred on Monday, according to Behlmer.

“The sergeant showed incredible restraint by not shooting the first one who came through the door. We are highly trained, and shooting someone is not our first thought. I commend him for his restraint, ” Behlmer said.Bay City News contributed to this report.
