SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco police said a bullet hit an unoccupied classroom window at a San Francisco elementary school Monday morning, according to Ofc. Carlos Manfredi.

Manfredi confirmed to KRON that there were shots fired outside of Visitacion Valley Elementary Monday morning at around 10 am. The altercation took place between two vehicles, with one firing at the other on the intersection of Schwerin and Visitacion.

Shell casings were found at the scene. The school was placed on lockdown amid the shooting, but the bullet hole in the window was found by a janitor later in the day, police said.

No video surveillance at the school could identify the parties responsible for the shooting, but detectives are confident that they will find out soon.

San Francisco Unified spokesperson Gentle Blythe confirmed that multiple shots were fired outside of the school Monday morning. The altercation took place at 10 a.m. Monday morning between two unidentified parties.

One bullet struck through the window of a kindergarten classroom on Visitacion Avenue, and it was under construction so no one was inside, Blythe said.

The lockdown has now been lifted.

The bullet hole still remains in the window.

The San Francisco Unified School District has issued a statement:

Today, at approximately 10:00 a.m. gunfire was exchanged near Visitacion Valley Elementary School.

The school went on immediate lockout and police were alerted.

Upon initial investigation, one bullet went through the window of an empty kindergarten classroom that is under construction. Fortunately, no students were in the classroom or injured and no students witnessed the exchange of gunfire.

The school called families and sent a letter home to alert them of the incident. However, it is important to note that no students were aware of the gunfire due to construction happening in this wing of the building and the fact that no students were outside on the yard at the time of the incident.

There will be additional counseling available for students on campus in the event that students hear about the incident from family members or media and want to discuss.

The incident remains under investigation with the San Francisco Police Department.
