CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (BCN)—A Brentwood man was arrested Saturday after leading a Contra Costa County deputy sheriff on a pursuit in Discovery Bay.

Just before 1:30 p.m., a deputy sheriff saw 23-year-old Estrus Smith spinning circles in a reportedly stolen Toyota truck in the middle of Discovery Bay Boulevard, Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop and got out of his patrol car. As he approached Smith’s truck, it sped off, heading south on Discovery Bay Boulevard, Lee said.

The deputy returned to his car and activated his emergency lights and siren, but Smith evaded him. After about one-eighth of a mile, Smith made a sharp right turn, striking a sedan and another truck.

The deputy then made the same turn, was reportedly blinded by smoke and debris from the crash, and hit the same truck that Smith had collided with, Lee said.

The driver of the sedan was alert and conscious, but was flown to a hospital in a helicopter. The sedan’s passenger was driven to a hospital by ambulance.

The truck’s occupants were unharmed and drove their truck away from the scene, Lee said.

Smith is suspected to have burglarized a home in Brentwood. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of felony evasion, felony evasion causing injury, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and violating his probation.

Smith is being held without bail, Lee said.
