BOSTON, Mass. (WTNH) — The Boston Coast Guard confirms to News 8 that 22-year-old Nathan Carman has been found safely after a week of being missing.
A freighter found Carman floating in a life raft about 100 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday.
Carman and his 54-year-old mother, Linda Carman, from Middletown were reported missing last Sunday after they left a dock in Point Judith, Rhode Island late Saturday night to go fishing and never returned.
The Coast Guard says he is in good condition and the freighter is bringing him to land.
Carman says the boat sank taking on the water.
Family and friends have hung yellow ribbons and signs of hope on their Middletown home.
“We are hopeful. The family is hopeful,” said family friend Sharon Hartstein. “I was thrilled that they found him and then I was devastated that Linda wasn’t with him.”
Hartstein says they’re always well-prepared. “She wouldn’t put her son in danger. She’s the momma bird. She would protect him at all costs.”
The Coast Guard called of their search for the two on Friday after searching more then 62,000 square nautical miles, an area larger than the state of Georgia.
Linda Carman was not found on the life raft and her whereabouts are still under investigation.
