BELMONT (KRON) — Belmont police are searching for a man accused of trying to snatch a woman’s purse at a Safeway parking lot on Wednesday morning.

Police said the attempted robbery happened at around 8:10 a.m. in the Safeway parking lot, located at 1100 El Camino Real, police said.

The victim, a 62-year-old Pacifica resident, said she was walking in the parking lot when a maroon Honda CRV pulled up near her. 

A man then got out of the vehicle and demanded the victim hand over her purse. The woman instead immediately turned around and ran into the store, police said.

The suspect then got back into the Honda, which was being driven by another person. The pair fled in the car onto Emmett Street, then onto El Camino Real, before heading east Ralston Avenue toward U.S. Highway 101, according to police.

Investigators have determined the Honda was reported stolen out of San Jose. The car has since been recovered however the suspects have not been apprehended.

The man who tried to take the victim’s purse was described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a dark goatee and wearing a hoodie, police said.

The victim was not able to provide a description of the Honda’s driver.

Surveillance video was able to capture images of the suspects.
