Dealing with dangerous pipe bombs is not limited to the high-profile cases of CNN and prominent Democrats.

In the Bay Area, we have a special team of bomb technicians that handle hazardous conditions.

On Thursday, KRON4 teamed up with the Alameda County Bomb Squad, which showed us a demonstration of a controlled detonation.

The Alameda County Bomb Squad has been around since 1973, and they deal with a very wide range of serious cases–from explosives put into letters to pipe bombs.

On Thursday, they showed KRON4 how they could get a call about a possible pipe bomb in a piece of luggage.

Alameda County Bomb Technician Mike Norton explained they would usually X-ray the luggage and then detonate it to effectively and safely mitigate the risk.

The team is constantly on call for risky situations in the Bay Area.

They train tirelessly to downgrade potentially hazardous situations.

Besides detonating items like luggage, they have special devices to handle nuclear, biological, and chemical threats.
