A rash of crimes in one upscale neighborhood in the South Bay is leaving residents on-edge, and on Wednesday night, they are fed up and want something to be done.
Last month, the Willow Glenn neighborhood in San Jose saw a jump in home invasion robberies, burglaries, and car thefts in broad daylight.
On Wednesday, residents met with law enforcement to try to come up with solutions. This is the second town hall meeting held in recent weeks.
This time, San Jose law enforcement is teaching residents how to protect themselves from these crimes.
“It used to be a really safe neighborhood, but Willow Glen is now becoming to me very scary,” resident Suzanne Cisturri said.
Residents are fed up with the uptick of crimes in the quiet upscale San Jose neighborhood.
“They’re watching us,” resident Richard Zappelli said.
Just this afternoon, someone stole Zappelli’s neighbor’s tools.
“One of my neighbors was doing handy work inside the house,” Zappelli said. “He went back outside to get his tools, and they’re all gone.”
Zappelli has lived in Willow Glen all his life.
He says the crime sprees started six months ago.
“My son went to take the garbage out, had the garage door open, when he came back outside, his bike was gone, so they’re watching us all the time,” Zappelli said.
San Jose police Capt. Heather Randol shares these tips.
“We always tell people not to leave valuables in their car, make sure that they have good lighting in their house, doors, and windows in their house locked, those are some of the simple things we share with them, but we also want to share with them how to identify something suspicious,” Capt. Randol said.
Law enforcement even changed its policies, responding to home alarms verified or not and have made arrests ever since.
There’s been more than a dozen arrests related to these crimes.
