Honolulu here we come!

Southwest Airlines is now selling tickets to Hawaii from the Bay Area and we are packing our bags because these airfares seem too good to be true.

Initial flights will takeoff between Oakland and Honolulu, with more flights to be added in April and May.

According to Southwest’s website, introductory fares start at $49 for travel in March and April, whereas tickets for the peak summer travel season range from $189-$214 each way.

Southwest flights will serve four of the Hawaiian islands:

  • Honolulu on Oahu
  • Kahului on Maui
  • Lihue on Kauai
  • Kona on the Big Island

For reference, we checked flights from Oakland to Honolulu with a departure date on March 25 and returning a week later on April 1.

With those dates and by selecting Southwest’s “Wanna Get Away” fare, a roundtrip ticket to Honolulu cost $157.20.

You could go to Hawaii for less than $200!

We can feel the breeze from the palm trees and taste the piña coladas right about now.

Just last week the Federal Aviation Administration granted Southwest approval to begin flights between California and Hawaii , capping the airline’s effort to extend its reach 2,400 miles across the Pacific.

Southwest successfully completed a test flight from Oakland to Honolulu earlier in February, and shortly afterward, competitors dropped the prices of roundtrip tickets to Hawaii in response.

Southwest’s first round of flights from the Bay to Honolulu start March 17.
