Thousands compete in Annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

Thousands of athletes competed in the Annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday morning. 

The triathlon kicked off at 7:30 a.m. consisting of a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to shore, and 18-mile bike rider and an 8-mile run through San Francisco. 


This year 2,000 individual triathletes, as well as relay teams, participated in one of the oldest, most difficult triathlons. 

Ben Kanute from Arizona, who was the overall champion in 2017 and 2018, was also announced as the first place winner this year with an overall time of 1 hour and 59 minutes. 

Olympian from Australia, Ashleigh Gentle, was announced as the women’s champion with an overall time of 2 hours and 13 minutes.
