A service dog who was shot while riding in a car along Interstate 980 in Oakland Friday night, succumbed to her injuries.
According to California Highway Patrol, on around 7:34 p.m. officers responded to a report of a shooting on eastbound I-980 near I-580.
Officers located a silver Hyundai Sonata in the center divider.
The driver, David Freitag, was injured by shattered glass and bullet fragment after someone opened fire.
Freitag had been watching Leila and was driving to Walnut Creek to return the dog to her owner.
CHP officers transported Leila to a local hospital, but she didn’t survive the shooting.
Freitag believes the shooting was random or a case of mistaken identity. Officers are working on a description of the suspect and vehicle.
