FREMONT, Calif. (KRON) – Police are searching for suspects involved in a shooting that injured a woman and her baby in Fremont on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Around 3:32 p.m. police responded to the area of the 37500 block of Mission Boulevard in Fremont’s Niles District following reports of a shooting.

The house is blocked off with caution tape and police officers remain on the scene Tuesday night. At one point, the entire street was blocked off, neighbors say.

“It’s very, it makes you feel unsafe even in your own home. Like what if someone comes in and you’re with your child alone what do you do,” Zaira Mendoza said.

Witnesses reported a number of suspects came to the house and fired rounds inside.

Police arrived to find a woman and her baby injured and were taken to a trauma center for treatment.

“We see the lady with her baby, she looked really pale when she was walking out she got up in the ambulance. I didn’t so no blood no nothing so I don’t know what happened but I hope they are safe,” Mendoza said.

Police say the woman’s lower body was grazed and her injury does not seem to be life-threatening.

During the shooting, the baby was dropped and as a precautionary, is being checked.

A large number of patrol officers, detectives and outside agency resources responded to the scene.

“At first, it was just one cop and then two minutes later we hear more cops and firefighters and the ambulance and all that,” Mendoza said.

Police are conducting a search of the area, they say this shooting does not appear to be random.

“I’m a little bit scared, you know cause when I get out of my house really early in the morning so right now I’m kind of scared to get out early and it scares me because I have a son too, so you know when you have a child its a little bit more scarier when things happen like this,” Mendoza said.

Police say this does not appear to be a random shooting.

Officials say the suspects possibly fled the scene in a car.

Investigators are working on leads and will release more information at a later time.
