SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier has announced she is not seeking re-election next year.

Speier represents California’s 14th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes San Mateo County and a portion of San Francisco County.

She made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter.

“I lived, and I served. It’s been a remarkable journey that has surpassed my wildest dreams,” she said.

Speier is one of the survivors of the Jonestown Massacre, visiting the cult’s location in Guyana as a legislative aide to Rep. Leo Ryan, who was shot and killed before they could return in 1978.

The following year, she made her run for Congress.

Since then, Speier has served in different capacities – California state assembly member, California state senator, U.S. representative for California’s 12 congressional district, and now California’s 14th district, which she has represented since 2013.

Speier said it’s time for her to go back home and be more than just a “weekend wife, mother and friend.”

KRON4 will be speaking with Speier in a live interview soon. Watch on KRONon.
