Police are still looking for the suspect in connection with a shooting Saturday night on eastbound I-580.

According to California Highway Patrol, an officer was on a traffic stop in the eastbound lanes of West Central Avenue just before 7 p.m. when a white SUV passed by and started firing shots.

A Ford Sedan was struck by one of the bullets.

There were no reported injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed for several hours but have since reopened.

CHP does not believe the shooter was targeting the officer, but describes it as “unnerving.”

“It was quite unnerving to the officer, but like I said he did what he was supposed to do. He acted very professional that shots were fired, and we responded as quickly as we could,” said Sergeant Mary Ziegenbein with CHP Oakland. “[It was a] scary scene all around for everybody.”

There have been a total 12 highway shooting, including this incident, reported so far this year.

That number overall has been trending down as this time last year there were 20 highway shootings.

CHP has the license plate number of the white SUV that may be involved but that information has yet to be released.
