The union that represents teachers in Oakland announced Monday that they have voted to strike.
95 percent of Oakland Unified teachers voted ‘YES’ to authorize a strike, according to union representatives.
A strike date has not yet been set but it’s expected by the end of the month.
The teachers are fighting for smaller class sizes and higher wages. They are also asking for additional student resources, like counselors and school nurses.
The union is asking for a 12 percent raise over three years. The district is offering a 5 percent pay hike.
The teacher’s union, which represents 3,000 educators in the Oakland Unified School District, voted on Friday and the results were announced Monday.
The union and the district are now waiting for the results of a state-appointed neutral fact-finding report.
The union said it can legally strike after the report is issued.
