Hundreds of Oakland students and parents marched for justice on Thursday in honor of a young boy and his mother who were killed by a hit-and-run driver last Saturday.
Six-year-old Angel Garcia Vasquez was walking to the laundry mat on the corner of 26th and Foothill with his mom and uncle when police say a driver hit them and took off.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 27-year-old Rasenoch Allen and say he is still at large.
Vasquez and his mom were killed and his uncle Jeymi Garica is fighting for his life at a local hospital.
While his friends from Fremont High School are fighting for justice.
Garcia’s friend, Julio Carrillo said, “He was like a brother to me, so seeing all these people around here makes me feel happy, makes me feel that there’s something right here that we have to fight for.”
Among the flowers, candles, and stuffed animals, students marched chanted and held signs as drivers honked in support of their movement.
They want a stop sign or a traffic signal at the intersection where neighbors say people speed and do not pay attention.
‘”We just want justice because this was not fair,” Carrillo said. “To take a life away and they’re responsible for this, just running away from the police, that’s not how this works.”
