The Oakland man arrested in a shooting that left a young boy fighting for his life told investigators that he slept with the firearm under his pillow the previous night.
According to court documents, the suspect, Terrence Wilson, claims that when he woke up to take his children to school, he forgot the gun was still under the pillow.
Wilson said he was playing video games in the living room of the home, and did not realize that Navaun Jackson, 4, wandered into another room.
Jackson found the gun and accidentally shot himself in the head.
The gun was unlocked and loaded.
Wilson and the boy’s mother, Brijjanna Price were all inside the home at the time of the shooting.
Price and Wilson told responding officers that Jackson was watching TV in the bedroom by himself when the gunshot was fired.
Wilson allegedly bought the gun about two weeks ago off the street in San Francisco.
He was prohibited from owning or purchasing a firearm due to prior felony convictions.
“Wilson was familiar with trigger locks for firearms but did not use them on this firearm as he had recently lost the keys to the device,” court documents state.
Jackson is still at Children’s Hospital Oakland where he remains in critical condition.
