Caltrans has reopened all lanes on northbound 880 in Oakland at 23rd Avenue after three steel beams fell across the freeway from being hit by a 28-year-old woman driving under the influence.

Originally, Caltrans expected the roads would remain closed until about 4 p.m.

Officials say the steel beams were scheduled to be removed today in the construction process.

“People think that you know their actions might only affect themselves, this is a good example, yeah nobody died today which we’re very fortunate about, however, look at all the Bay Area residents that are being affected by this person’s irresponsibility,” said Matthew Hamer with the CHP.

All lanes from 880 have been redirected to exit at 23rd Avenue and all others are asked to use alternate routes like 580.

California Highway Patrol says around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday morning, a 28-year-old woman from Hayward was driving at high speed before losing control of her car.

At 23rd Avenue the two beams fell onto the freeway from an elevated platform at a construction zone.

Officials say she hit the support beams holding steel girders for the 23rd Avenue overpass that is under construction.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

CHP has confirmed that the woman was arrested with a DUI.
