Morgan Hill police officers help deliver baby girl on side of road

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KRON) – Morgan Hill police helped deliver a healthy baby girl Monday night after responding to an urgent phone call from a man who said his baby just couldn’t wait to be born.

All’s well that ends well after what began as a frantic 911 call for help last night in Morgan Hill.

A quick-thinking father-to-be teamed up with police and firefighters in the front seat of his car and there was no time to spare.

“Last night we got dispatched on medical aid for an infant possibly not breathing,” Captain Colin Malon said.

Firefighter-paramedic Colin Malone is talking about what happened Monday evening in a photo posted on Facebook by Morgan Hill police, along with the caption “frantic father-to-be calls 911 saying the baby wasn’t waiting.”

“Due to the quick action on the part of the father who performed some chest compressions the baby started breathing on it’s own,” Malone said.

The baby was born prematurely, moments after mom and dad pulled over at the corner of Jarvis and Sutter.

Arriving literally seconds later, police and paramedics are being credited with assisting in the birth, making sure the happy parents were not deprived of the full experience.

“We started to clamp the cord and we got the father involved and he cut the cord and was very ecstatic to have done that as it was his first child,” Malone said.

Captain Malone was assisted by firefighter-paramedic Seve Gonzalez and EMT

Jason Podesta said they were just doing their jobs.

“You just fall back on your training, there aren’t a whole lot of thoughts going through your head you just make sure everyone’s taken care of,” Podesta said.

“You have to be professional and try to stay calm because negative energy can impact the patient so you have to reassure them everything is going to be okay,” Gonzalez said.

The paramedics point out that Morgan Hill police deserve an assist for being first on the scene and let’s not forget about the mother, who gave birth, unexpectedly, to a healthy baby girl, in the front seat of a car.

“There couldn’t have been a better ending to a story of last night. Mother and child to my understanding are doing well, you just couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” Malone said.
