Officials say 16 of the 31 original joints on the upper deck of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge have been replaced.
In a statement Monday, Caltrans officials said crews will continue work on replacing ten of the eastern and western ends of the bridge.
If you’re driving across the bridge, you may notice thin steel plates being installed at work locations. Drivers can pass over these plates at the posted speed; there is no need to slow down, officials said.
All work is being done at night, so drivers should expect lane closures most night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Each of the original joints, which date back to the mid-1950s, is being replaced by a new joint that features a rubberized seal designed to shrink and expand with changing temperatures.
Officials say this will prevent cracking of the surrounding concrete road deck.
At this point officials say crews are on target to complete the joint replacement work in July.
