NAPA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – Thousands of PG&E customers have been warned that their power could be turned off this week.
The utility says that in order to avoid starting wildfires, they may need to power down electric power lines due to high winds and hot temperatures.
In Sonoma County, about 17,000 customers have been warned, in addition to 5,656 customers in Napa County.
In Santa Rosa, around 15,000 customers in the eastern part of the city could be impacted by a potential shutoff.
PG&E says the power would be shutdown starting late Monday night and being fully restored by Wednesday night.
A Red Flag Warning will also be in effect in the area.
The concern is that high winds over the next couple of days could damage power lines and potentially spark wildfires.
The areas in Napa County that could be affected include:
- Deer Park
- Angwin
- Calistoga
- Aetna Springs
- Berryessa Estates
- Eastern slopes above St. Helena
- Parts of Pope Valley
Power shutoffs are not expected to impact the City of Napa, City of American Canyon and Town of Yountville.
Check to see if your address will be affected.
The rolling blackouts we’ve seen recently because of the ongoing heatwave tend to be fairly short. Sometimes just a few minutes or a couple of hours.
A PSPS can actually extend for days because after PG&E turns off the power they need to go and inspect their power lines for any sort of damage to make sure it’s safe to re-energize those lines and that can sometimes take a few days to complete.
Anyone who potentially could be involved in this PSPS needs to be aware that their food could go bad in their fridge because power is going to be up for a while.
Anyone who has a medical issue where they rely on electricity, maybe to keep their medicine cool.
Be aware that the power could be out for several days.
