A 56-year-old man was killed by police in an officer-involved shooting in San Leandro Tuesday night, police say.
The shooting occurred at 4:17 p.m. at a home in the 600 block of Martin Boulevard.
In a press conference Tuesday night, San Leandro Police Officer Isaac Benabou said officers arrived on the scene and found the suspect armed with a machete and exposing himself to children.
Benabou only identified the suspect as a 56-year-old man.
He said the suspect refused to comply with officers and expressed intent to harm officers.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to the spokesman.
The suspect was later on the front porch of a home in the neighborhood, armed with a “wooden object,” according to police.
Police emphasized the object was the same shape and size as a handgun.
Police say:
A man with a machete was in the street, exposing himself with kids around
He didn’t listen to police & went to his front porch
As they approached he stood up suddenly & showed something that appeared to be a gun
It turned out to be a wooden object

While on the porch, police said the suspect stood up with the object in hand and pointed it toward officers.
That’s when police said an officer, a 9-and-a-half-year veteran with the department, shot the suspect once.
The suspect was shot and killed at 4:17 p.m., according to police.
Police have not provided any other details.
