SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks when four coordinated terrorist attacks by Al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people.
Two decades later — memorials will be held around the United States to honor the victims who lost their lives on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
In the Bay Area, several events are planned for the weekend. You can find a list of events happening below:
East Bay
Alameda County Sheriff and Fire Departments will hold a memorial ceremony at the Alameda Fairgrounds at 10 a.m.
A 9/11 commemoration will be held at the USS Hornet from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
South Bay
San Jose Fire Department is hosting a Patriot Day Anniversary Commemoration. It will start with a procession down South Market to Firehouse 1, followed by a brief ceremony and reception. It starts at 9:45 a.m. and will also be live-streamed on Facebook.
In Los Gatos, a Remembrance Day event will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Flame of Liberty Memorial located at the Lose Gatos Civic Center.
San Francisco
Nearly 1,000 volunteers are gathering at the palace of the fine arts for a day of service and remembrance. Volunteers will pack up 200,000 meals for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. That will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. — You will need to register online to participate.
An Annual National First Responders Fund 2021 Stair Climb will also take place. Mayor London Breed will be speaking at 8:30 a.m.
