Thick smoke is hovering over Oakland on Monday morning after a 3-alarm fire broke out on East 12th Street and 19th Avenue.
Firefighters are at Emperor Electrical building working to get the fire under control so that it doesn’t spread south to a construction building.
Officials say that those who were inside were evacuated. Fire crews rescued about 20 people from inside the building.
The fire began outside from a pile of debris on Solano Avenue. There was a window open in the warehouse and flames traveled inside.
The heavy fuel inside allowed the fire to grow rapidly.
Fire officials say that the building is at a total loss. Crews are throwing water on power lines near the flames which could shut down the BART station nearby.
At this time there have been no reports of BART delays.
Authorities say there have been no reports of firefighters or civilians being injured.
The fire has caused traffic to be blocked on Interstate 880.
The area surrounding the fire is contained so those driving near the fire is asked to avoid the area.
