Every little bit counts when it comes to combating the Bay Area housing crisis.
And in Fremont, the organization Habitat for Humanity is building dozens of affordable homes currently under construction that will soon house families.
As cities across the Bay Area honor Affordable Housing Week, KRON4 on Thursday spoke with a woman when she visited her future home.
As she walks up the steps to her future new home in Fremont, a huge weight has been lifted off Yesenia Ramirez’s shoulders.
The married 30-year-old old mother of two young children can already envision what the rooms will look like.
“This is where I wanna…have my kids grow up,” Ramirez said. “Where I wanna raise my kids.”
Ramirez and her husband were both born and raised in San Jose.
They still live there in one of Yesenia’s family members’ garage, converted to a studio.
“My kids want their own space, and its hard for them to find a place to play,” Ramirez said.
That won’t be an issue come the fall when Yesenia and her family are supposed to move in. Habitat for Humanity East Bay Silicon Valley broke ground on the 30-unit condo-style housing development on Central Avenue last July.
Yesenia applied for the non-profit home ownership program about five years ago.
Spokesperson Patti Wang Cross says that decision will soon pay off for her.
“Before habitat came along, she was starting to look at really far-flung options in high crime neighborhoods and really felt like she was, she was out of options for staying in the Bay Area,” Wang said.
Instead, Yesenia will own her home and pay a mortgage at below market rate, which means no more than 30 percent of her household income will go towards housing.
“There’s hope,” Ramirez said. “You know, a lot of the times, I had a dream of owning, but…with how the housing is, you know, I didn’t really see that happening until Habitat, and I didn’t think I was going to be chosen, which I did and it’s incredible.”
On Friday, 100 women leaders in the community will volunteer their time to help construct Yesenia’s future home.
Moving closer to her dream becoming a reality.
