GILROY (KRON) – A woman is behind bars after admitting to police that she killed her 2-year-old on Sunday, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
Around 11:30 a.m., the woman called saying she drowned her daughter in the bathtub.
Officials arrived at the home on the 7900 block of Westwood Drive.
Authorities found the child lifeless in the bathtub full of water, and they immediately started CPR.
The child was taken to Saint Louise Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police found 35-year-old Marcie Montelongo near the intersection of Miller Avenue and First Street.
She told authorities that she killed her daughter and was taken into custody.
Montelongo was booked for murder at the Santa Clara County Jail.
Neighbors of the woman are horrified over what happened.
Many parents and mothers say they’re disgusted.
“When we came back the area was yellow taped. Obviously we knew something was wrong,” said neighbor Leon Clinton.
Clinton and his wife Julie Dahl-Clinton returned home from church Sunday morning to find part of their apartment building surrounded by police and crime scene tape.
“Very hard to hear, sharing a wall with this innocent person. This baby,” Clinton said.
Police say they tried giving the 2-year-old child CPR and then rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The suspect was found less than a mile from the home.
Neighbors say Montelongo recently moved in and only lived there for two months.
“Whenever I passed by or heard or saw the door was open, I always saw two adults and two kids, but you know it was always misty because there was no connection,” Clinton said.
Clinton said he rarely saw the mother and she often avoided any sort of communication.
Authorities are now investigating the incident at this time.
