SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — Police said a pedestrian was hit and killed by a garbage/recycling truck in San Jose on Wednesday morning.

The San Jose Police Department said it happened just before 7:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Fontanelle Ct, where police are still on the scene.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a female victim who had apparently been struck by a garbage truck.

“The victim was pushing out the trashcans to the curbside and entered the blind spot of the truck. Whether or not the victim was in motion at the time we are still getting those facts,” Officer Steve Aponte said.

The driver of the garbage truck is cooperating with investigators.

San Jose is already seeing many more pedestrian deaths in 2022 than there were at the same time last year. This is the city’s 8th pedestrian death of the year and 10th fatal crash.

The police department says they will step up in traffic enforcement to hopefully prevent pedestrian deaths but that it really falls to drivers to pay attention and follow the rules of the road.

“All of the traffic deaths we have seen this year, almost all of them, were preventable if people had followed the rules of the road,” Aponte said.

It’s unclear if the driver of the garbage truck will face any charges.

Police say drugs and alcohol were not involved and the investigation continues.
