The East Bay Municipal Utility District says water may be free, but getting to you is not.
They say they need to do repairs and upgrades to their system and for that, they’re turning to customers to pay for it.
The two-year, $2.3 billion budget will pay for “critical improvements to the water and wastewater systems.”
Bad news – the first rate increase begins in just a few weeks.
Water rates will increase 6.5% on July 1, 2019, and 6.25% on July 1, 2020.
Come July 1 of this year, a family uses about 200 gallons a day will pay $3.62 more a month.
By July 1, 2020, that same family will pay $3.73 more a month.
Officials say it all depends on how much water you use.
Low water use (100 gallons daily) would see an increase of $2.56 per month for the first year, and an additional $2.64 per month starting July 2020.
High water use (averaging 600 gallons daily) will go up $9.86 per month the first year, and an additional $10.05 starting July 2020.
East Bay MUD serves Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.
