OAKLAND (KRON) — The first official weekend of summer 2019 is an attraction for illegal sideshow activity in the Bay Area East Bay law enforcement officers are joining forces to prevent the dangerous stunt driving spectacles before they get started.
The California Highway Patrol is teaming up with the Oakland Police Department in their effort to crackdown on illegal sideshow activity in Oakland.
The CHP says its all hands on deck this weekend and that drivers can expect to see Oakland police and highway patrol officers out in full force this weekend.
“We are going to be highly visible,” said CHP Officer Kristopher Borer. “Expect to see us on, on-ramps, off-ramps. Air units up above. Our eyes in the sky the entire weekend, as well as OPD on surface streets on the weekend.”
The Oakland Police Department is reiterating that those who participate in sideshows in the city will face consequences.
“If you come to Oakland and engage in illegal activity, whether it’s a vehicle code, criminal activity, firing your guns off, not only can you receive a citation, arrest, tow, ultimately your car can go on to be crushed if you don’t pay the fees [and] end up in the scrap yard,” Oakland Police Officer Johanna Watson said.
Watson says sometimes they tow as many as 80 vehicles during a weekend and other times, the department doesn’t tow any.
