Deadly Yountville hostage situation survivor tells harrowing tale of inside veterans center

KRON4 is hearing from one of the women who was in the room with the gunman Albert Wong before he opened fire.

She has a harrowing tale about seeing Wong walk into a retirement party and taking three of her co-workers hostage.

“We have a lot to do,” Haley Rekdahl said. “I know those of us who are still involved are dedicated to still being involved and to honor the women.”

Rekdahl is a residential clinician at Pathway Home. She was with nine other people for a retirement celebration when Wong walked into the room heavily armed.

Three Pathway employees, all women, were killed.

“Well, they were the three main clinicians here, so, they each had a lot of interaction with him,” Rekdahl said.

Rekdahl says she is familiar with Wong.

“I worked with him a lot when he was a resident here,” Rekdahl said.

Haley says he called her by name telling her she could leave. She says after she got out, she and others drove to another building and met up with family members of the women hostages.

One of them, Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba, was several months pregnant.
