SAN JOSE (KRON) — The difference between a flat tire or worse is often times as as simple as a shovel-full of asphalt.

KRON4’s Rob Fladeboe caught up with guys filling potholes along northbound Monterey Road in San Jose, which has been taking a beating by all the recent wet weather, says City Transportation Spokesman Colin Heyne.

“We’ve got extra crews out working on potholes that were wrought by the storm last week,” Heyne said. “We’ve got three extra crews working right now.”

It isn’t just Monterey Road of course. Hundreds of new potholes have appeared in recent weeks while the rain has made existing potholes and cracks worse because flooding and standing water tends to undermine the road bed below.

“Over the weekend we got over fifty requests for pothole repairs which is well over what we normally get and we’re also driving around looking for potholes,” Heyne said.

City crews like this one will fill an estimated 10,000 potholes in a typical year but that number will almost certainly be much higher this year.

The goal is to get a crew out to fill a given pothole within 48 hours after it was reported.
