WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KRON) – A bizarre set of back-to-back collisions happened in the East Bay on Friday — One of which ended in a fatality, keeping the road closed for five hours.

An investigation is underway after two cars were involved in a crash Friday in Walnut Creek.

Walnut Creek police shut down eastbound lanes to investigate the incident which happened in the area of Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove Road just before 9 a.m.

KRON4 reporter Maureen Kelly, who was at the scene, said one car had a smashed window and hood dented and what appeared to be blood.

According to a city official, around 7 a.m. Walnut Creek police dispatch got a call that a car crashed into the sound wall.

The impact knocked down a major portion of the wall, sending chunks of concrete flying into the yard of the home behind it.

There was no major damage to the home itself — The woman living there said it sounded like a bomb going off.

She got up to see the Honda that crashed into the wall and said it ended up pointing in the wrong direction so that it flipped around possibly by the force of the impact.

The video showed the car being towed away. The woman said she also saw a man, who she believes was the driver, walking slowly past the hole in the wall. She did not see what happened next.

A spokesperson for the city of Walnut Creek says somehow that man got out into the roadway — That’s when a second 911 call came into authorities, this time from the driver of this Acura.

That driver said she hit a man who suddenly appeared in front of her vehicle and she didn’t have time to stop.

The front windshield was smashed and the hood was dented.

The driver behind the wheel in the second fatal crash was uninjured. She stayed on the scene and will not be facing any charges.

The man she hit was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Contra Costa County Coroner has identified him as 54-year-old Adam Chang Kao of Walnut Creek.

KRON4 spoke to a man who walks this stretch every morning and says he’s not surprised to see car wrecks on this busy roadway.

The Walnut Creek Police Department is still investigating what caused the first accident and why that driver ended up in the roadway.

It’s possible he was disorientated from the impact of his car smashing into the sound wall. At this time police say there were no visible signs of this being a DUI.
