The county’s public health lab conducted tests, which will be confirmed by the CDC in upcoming days. The person had no known travel history and no known contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

“This case suggests coronavirus may be circulating in Contra Costa County,” said Ori Tzvieli, the county’s public health medical director.

Tzvieli said, “The patient is now in isolation and being treated at a hospital in the county. The patient has underlying health conditions and is in critical condition.”

Health officials are trying to identify anyone who may have had close contact with the patient.

“We are not releasing any more information about the patient to protect their medical privacy,” Tzvieli said.

The city where the patient resides was not released.

“All hospitals in Contra Costa County are safe for the public. We are not releasing the hospital where the patient is being treated. The patient is in medical isolation and completely separated from the public,” Tzvieli said.
