OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — The California Highway Patrol is on the scene of a fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash on I-880 in Oakland.
Around 6:30 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian on southbound I-880 near the 7th street off ramp.
When officers arrived, they located a man lying on the roadway. The man suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota pick-up truck was traveling in the #1 lane when it suddenly struck the man who was standing in the lane.
The driver of the Toyota immediately stopped to help and was cooperative during the investigation, officials said. It was determined the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
At this time, police don’t know why the pedestrian was walking in lanes of traffic and whether or not he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The identity of the man has not be confirmed at this time.
The #1 and #2 lanes remained closed until around 8:50 p.m.
Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to call the CHP Oakland Area office at (510) 457-2875.
