Crossing guard struck by car near school in Lafayette dies

LAFAYETTE, Calif. (KRON) – The crossing guard that was hit by a car on Wednesday near a school in Lafayette has died, according to his family.

Around 2:56 p.m., officials say an SUV hit the two people on School Street in front of Stanley Middle School.

Police received reports of a person trapped under a car and when they arrived on the scene, residents helped them pull an ‘unresponsive person’ from under the car.

A child suffered minor injuries and the crossing guard, who had been stuck under the car, was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to police. The crossing guard was later pronounced dead.

The family identified the crossing guard as 45-year-old Ashley Dias and says that this was his second day on the job.

They say he had just started working to help kids cross the street to protect them from cars.

Neighbors tell KRON4 that School Street can be dangerous.

Police combed through the SUV while closing off School Street between Avalon Court and Paradise Court.

Police had several investigators working on the scene. Neighbors say this is an unfortunate but harsh lesson for people to be aware of.

Authorities continue to investigate and say that the driver is being cooperative.

The driver has not been identified.
