OAKLAND (KRON) – Police in Oakland are investigating an armed robbery that led to a shootout in the streets between a business owner and two suspects Monday morning.
Around 9:45 a.m. authorities responded to the 3300 block of Grand Avenue at a coin store.
The business owner told police that two armed men were buzzed into the rare coin store, told the owner to get on the ground and began to clean out the safes and display cabinets.
“Gold, silver, cash. Probably about $60,000 worth,” Charlie Mammoser, the coin store owner, said.
The owner chased the men who fled the scene on foot with merchandise, police say.
“Uh I wasn’t thinking when I went after them, I just, kind of a reaction,” Mammoser said.
Mammoser grabbed his gun and followed the suspects up Elwood Avenue.
About a block away from the business, gunshots were fired between the suspects and the owner.
“Went up the hill and uh, went around the corner and I pointed my gun at them, I said ‘hey stop.’ You know, and he turned and point and I believe he shot at me so I shot a couple of times at him. He dropped the bag and kept going up the hill. The other guy was in a car and he drove by and he shot at me as he was driving away, so I took a shot at him and then the bag was too heavy for me to carry so I dragged it all the way back down to my store,” Mammoser said.
Police say a stray bullet went into a nearby residence and hit someone inside.
That person was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Police are now working to determine whose gun the bullet came from.
The suspects were able to get away and left behind the stolen merchandise.
