Three people are dead and a 17-year-old boy hospitalized following a crash on I-80 near Emeryville Thursday.

According to CHP, the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on WB 80 just past Emeryville and before the MacArthur maze.

Authorities say a big rig was parked on the shoulder in the curve when a SUV carrying a family of four from San Pablo plowed into the truck from behind.

Three of the four people in the car died in the crash.

At this time they have only been identified as a man and two women.

Authorities said the ages of those inside the car ranged from 17 to 26-years-old.

The fourth family member, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries and remains in serious condition

The truck driver was not injured.

Authorities confirm the truck driver was inside sleeping in his cabin.

The law does allow a big rig to pull to the shoulder and stay there, but for emergencies only.

CHP is investigating if the driver was having an emergency when he pulled over the shoulder and stayed there.

Authorities say speed and wet roads were factors in the crash.
