A 23-year-old woman was killed in a suspected DUI solo-car crash in Contra Costa County early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials say around 5:12 a.m. a car veered off the road and hit a pole on Lone Tree Way near Adams Lane in Brentwood area.

CHP arrived to find a Nissan Sentra with major damage and two people inside — The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Joseph John Martinez from Vallejo, sustained minor injuries. Authorities say he was suspected of driving under the influence.

Martinez, was taken to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek to be treated and has since been arrested for suspicion of felony DUI resulting in the death of his passenger.

Following an investigation, officers say Martinez crossed the double yellow lines and then veered back into the lane before slamming into the utility pole — They say the passenger was Martinez’s girlfriend.

The coroners’ office will release the woman’s identity at a later time.

If you have any information on the collision, you are asked to contact the CHP at (925) 646-4980.
