UNION CITY (KRON) – Two juveniles were killed in a shooting early Saturday morning in Union City, according to the Union City Police Department.
Around 1:26 a.m. police received reports of gunshots in the area of Sherman Drive and Colgate Drive.
Authorities arrived to find the two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds in or near the parking lot of Searles Elementary School.
Police say one victim died on the scene and the second died while being taken to a trauma center.
Superintendent of the New Haven Unified School District John Thompson released a statement following the fatal shooting.
One boy attended school within the district, most recently at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School.
The other boy was a former New Haven Unified School District student.
“I am writing with some very sad news about a shooting incident that occurred very early this morning, Saturday, November 23. What we know is that this shooting occurred in the area of Sherman Drive and Colgate Drive in or near the Searles Elementary School parking lot. Tragically, two juveniles were shot and killed. One victim was a student who attended school within the district. The other victim was a former New Haven Unified student.We will have support for our students and staff at the sites where these students attended when school resumes after the Thanksgiving break. We also work closely with the Union City Police Department to ensure that our schools are as safe as they can be.“

At this time, their identities have not been released.
A district spokesperson said the district will provide support for students and staff at the schools where the victims attended once school resumes after Thanksgiving break.
There are no suspects in custody.
Police continue to investigate and remain on scene.
Sherman Drive is expected to remain closed between Colgate Drive and 15th Street for several hours.
