ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) – Antioch police say there are no leads on a suspect involved in the deadly shooting of a 12-year-old girl.

It happened Wednesday night inside a bedroom.

For at least the third time in less than a month, a person 18 years of age or younger has been killed by gun violence in the city of Antioch.

The latest victim is identified by her grandparents as 12-year-old Kailia Davis.

On Wednesday night, she was shot to death inside this home on the 1200 block of Oak Haven Way.

“We don’t know what happened, how it happened, but we’re just here,” grandfather Charles Davis said.

Here to remember a girl whose grandfather Charles Davis says did well in school but had a habit of running away from her home in Oakland.

This time she headed to Antioch where she lost her life.

“I know her mother has been searching for her,” Davis said.

“She was a typical little 12-year-old girl. You know, managing fast. Liked her little toys and her, um, like shopping like just any other little teenager. On Facebook or whatever all the time. She’s just — she’s just special to us. And, I don’t know why this ended up here like this,” grandmother Brenda Davis said.

Antioch police say when officers responded to the home at around 7 p.m. The girl was already suffering from at least one gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom.

She never made it to a hospital.

Mayor Lamar Thorpe says gun violence needs to be controlled.

“We can’t put officers in everybody’s home — that’s an unrealistic expectation. What we can do is expect our congressional representatives to act on meaningful gun reform. So that they can take these guns off the streets. And, ban people who should not have these types of weapons from having them in the first place,” Mayor Thorpe said.

Investigators say the suspect in this case left the scene and has not been found.
