SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Bay Area is going to be getting a new area code in two years.

The 510 area code is expected to use up all of its available prefixes by June 2019. This would affect the East Bay.

The state has started the process of introducing a new one.

The CPUC says current customers will be allowed to keep their current phone numbers, including the area code.

The new area code is expected to be added no later than Dec. 2018 for new customers.

We will learn more about this transition at the beginning of next year.

That is when three public hearings are scheduled.
