BAY AREA (KRON) — A new report says super lice are becoming resistant to over the counter remedies parents have relied on for years.

“Those products don’t work anymore on super lice or their eggs,” said Dr. Krista Lauer, medical director at the Lice Clinics of America.

Researchers from Lice Clinics of America reports a 20 percent increase in lice activity in the Bay Area this winter over last year.

Though not life threatening, lice are highly contagious.

“It doesn’t hurt so it’s not going to hurt anybody. It’s not going to cause any diseases because a lot of people freak out, it’s just a little tiny bug,” said Sofia Deleuse, the co-owner of Comb It Out Lice Removal.

Doctors say head lice is very common. In fact one little girl had lice removed during a head check at a salon in Concord.

Deleuse says they do things the natural way with a removing comb and hair product.

“We use just regular old water in the hair, put some conditioner in the hair and methodically and tediously comb through the hair and just pick them out,” Deleuse said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says head to head contact with an already infected person is the most common way to get head lice.

Common places like school, the playground, home and elsewhere such as sports activities and camps. Early detection is key.

“Infestations are extremely common, almost a right of passage of childhood so take a breath, and recognize also that there are highly effective and safe treatments available,” said Lauer.
