SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Several Bay Area high schools are planning to walkout in protest of President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday.
More than 1,000 students left campuses to protest in San Francisco. It began outside of City Hall. They then began marching down Market Street towards Embarcadero. Once they got to the Ferry Building they began walking down Embarcadero.
By 11:30 a.m., the massive group of protesters reached Pier 39. Their goal was to make it to the Golden Gate Bridge.
The students are holding Anti-Trump signs and chanting “Not my president.”
Muni service along Market Street has been re-routed to nearby Mission Street as a result of the protest.
SFUSD officials sent out a statement about the student walkout:
“We recognize our students’ right to free speech and understand their need to use it. The walkout this morning was not authorized by SFUSD staff,” district officials said. “Per our standard protocol, we will be notifying families regarding their unexcused absence through our attendance system.”
Walkouts planned for Thursday:
- George Washington High School in San Franciso
- Napa High School will have a peaceful protest
- Several high schools in the Hayward Unified School District. They will march in front of Hayward City Hall.
- California High School in San Ramon .
- Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose
- Several San Jose schools including Mount Pleasant High School, William C. Overfelt High School
- Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco
- Pittsburg High School
- Pinole Valley High School
- Concord Mt. Diablo High School
- Alameda High School
- Milpitas High School
- Korematsu Middle School and El Cerrito High School
- Concord High School and Mount Diablo High School
- Antioch High School
On Wednesday, thousands of students across the Bay Area walked out of school to protest the results of the presidential election.
Those schools included Oakland Technical High School and Berkeley High School.
Students say they feel like they aren’t going to be represented. They are also afraid they are not going to be able to see their families who don’t live in the U.S.
