HAGERSTOWN, Md. (KRON/AP) – A 51-year-old man known for visiting hospitalized children dressed as Batman died in a crash, after his Batmobile had engine trouble, Maryland state police said.
Investigators say on Sunday night, Leonard Robinson of Owings Mills was in the fast lane of Interstate 70, checking the engine of his custom-made Batmobile, when the vehicle was struck by a Toyota Camry. Robinson was then hit by the Batmobile. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The Camry’s driver wasn’t injured.
Robinson was known for dressing up as Batman and traveling to hospitals in the Baltimore-Washington area, where he would visit sick children. He gained national attention in 2012 when dashcam video surfaced of police pulling him over as he drove his Batmobile.
The Washington Post reported in 2012 that Robinson spent more than $25,000 of his own money on Batman-related items every year, including toys, T-shirts and books he gave away to kids.
