MONTEREY (KRON/BCN) — Swimmers are being warned to stay out of the water at Monterey Municipal Beach after health officials found high levels of bacteria in the water, county officials said on Tuesday.
The Monterey County Health Department says water samples collected Monday showed high levels of bacteria that could pose a risk of illness. The threat prompted officials to post an advisory at the beach.
The bacteria can come from marine life and other animals, rainfall runoff, storm drains, or human activity, according to health experts.
Officials plan to continue testing the water and say the advisory will be lifted when water samples show safe levels of indicator bacteria.
