WATSONVILLE (KRON) — An 18-month-old baby boy drowned Monday afternoon in a pool northwest of Watsonville, a Santa Cruz County sheriff’s spokesman said today.

Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, deputies were dispatched to a reported drowning at the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay Kampgrounds of America camp at 1186 San Andreas Road, sheriff’s Lt. Kelly Kent said.

The baby was at the pool with family and friends when he wandered near the hot tub and fell in and drowned, Kent said.

Life saving measures were taken to revive the boy before deputies arrived, according to Kent.

He was transported by ambulance to Watsonville Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Kent said.

The boy and his family are from Scotts Valley.

“This appears to be a tragic accident and every parent’s worst nightmare,” Kent said.
