An autopsy has been released in the case of a high school student drowning in the school’s pool in Pleasant Hill.

The report is now claiming the student’s death was not a suicide as it was initially listed. The family is now demanding answers after the tragic death.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office released a 16-page autopsy on Benjamin Curry.

Curry was a ninth-grade student at San Ramon Valley High School.

Curry was discovered by students and staff in the deep end at the schools pool back on May 8.

At a makeshift memorial at the school following his death, suicide prevention hotline details were put up.

Many students said on camera they believed Curry had committed suicide.

Now, in the autopsy is a much different finding.

In the highly detailed report, the corner now states, “the decedent was found under the water in the San Ramon Valley High School swimming pool.

“Although the decedent suffered from depression, there is no indication the decedent intended to drown himself. Furthermore,  this death will be classified as an accident,” the autopsy said.

A school resource officer reveals surveillance video at the school shows Curry submerged in the water during a swim class.

As the class ended, students were seen leaving, but it is unclear whether he left with others or remained. However, 10 minutes later as the next class appeared, they found Curry underwater.

They removed him and a teacher began CPR until paramedics arrived.

The school district is not responding to the report directly, instead saying they are cooperating with the police department as it continues its investigation.

Additionally, in an email statement, the district said their thoughts continue to be with the student’s family and loved ones, as well as our students and staff.

Curry’s parents now have an attorney who has many questions, such as whether he was adequately supervised during a swim class.

Here is the full statement from the school:

The school district cannot comment on an active police investigation. Any questions related to the cause of death should be directed the Danville Police or the Coroner’s Office. Our message from the beginning to our staff, students and parents has been to not engage in the spreading of rumors and to give Danville Police time to complete their investigation.

We were asked by Danville Police to defer our internal review until the criminal investigation was concluded so that we did not interfere with their investigation. We have complied with that request. Once police complete their investigation, we intend to commence our own internal review. As part of that process, we will be examining our policies and procedures in an ongoing effort to try to ensure the safety of our students.

Our thoughts continue to be with the student’s family and loved ones, as well as our students and staff.
