PETALUMA (KRON) — Authorities in Petaluma have identified and located the owner of a dog that was thought to be thrown out of a car on Highway 101 and charges may be brought against him, according to Petaluma Animal Services.

California Highway Patrol received multiple calls of a dog on Hwy 101 near Lakeville on Tuesday, according to Petaluma Animal Services. The dog was taken to the hospital at Petaluma Animal Servies with injuries that are consistent with being thrown out of a vehicle.

The dog, named Martha, suffered a broken left leg, broken pelvis, and a fractured mandibular canine. The dog is now the property of Animal Servies and will not be going back to the owner, animal services said on Facebook.

But a follow-up investigation on Thursday found that Martha may not have been thrown out of the car after all.

“This investigation is not complete, but we believe she left her yard, possibly 2-3 days ago, and was according to witnesses, subsequently hit by a semi-truck on 101, then a motorist stopped and caught her. Given the nature of her injuries, Martha will live in PASF foster care and recover, and from there we will find her a loving and responsible home,” animal services said on Facebook.

Animal services also said they would make sure the dog “has an excellent future.”

No word on what charges the owner might be facing, and the investigation is still ongoing.
