Attorneys representing residents surrounding the Hunters Point shipyard in San Francisco have filed a lawsuit.
It is related to allegations of fraud by U.S. Navy contractor Tetra Tech In the cleanup of contaminated soil in the area.
This lawsuit is seeking $27 billion dollars in damage related to what lawyers are calling “generational threats” of cancer and other incurable illnesses related to the contamination at Hunters Point.
A 2017 letter from the EPA to the Navy indicated that between 90 and 97 percent of Tetra Tech’s radiation data was suspect and potentially fabricated.
Community leaders held a press conference on Tuesday to discuss the suit.
For its part, Tetra Tech has denied the allegations of misconduct and offered to pay for independent retesting of the shipyard to prove no wrongdoing.
